Imaginaire
There are presently no open calls for submissions.
Imaginaire is currently open for submissions. We seek either mathematical fiction or closely related to math fiction. We are, however, open to an author’s interpretation of what that means. We are less concerned with what “genre” a piece falls into (and are not convinced that the term “genre” applies to short fiction in any coherent way) and more concerned with being challenged, inspired, frightened, or piqued.
In addition to standard fiction, we will consider comics, creative nonfiction, novellas, art, and experimental pieces if they are successful. Anything creatively composed will work for us. Send it along. We are also interested in cover art for the PDF issues.
Formatting: We have no specific formatting requirements. We have a wide range of modern computer programs that allow us to open any number of different file types. The one stipulation there is to make sure it is a format we can copy and paste. Or, at any rate, have such a format available if you are selected. Readability is more important than word counts. Take a moment to make sure it looks the way you want it to look, then send it along.
The Zine: Both an online and a PDF version, in addition to an ebook version, will be available for each issue.
Pay: We are not able to pay at this time. Imaginaire is a labor of love. That said, we are working hard to raise money to make sure our authors get paid. So how can you help, if you’re an author? First, you can donate. Remember that most readers are authors and vice versa (the Venn diagrams are almost a total overlap, if you will). You can further help yourself by spreading the word! Tell you friends and family and your rich Uncle Clevis to donate to our campaign. Most of that money is going to go into you the author’s pocket. That’s true of Imaginaire, or any literary journal. Support the arts by being active in the arts and encouraging everyone you know to do the same.
Podcasts: We may occasionally do a story as a podcast, with author permission. If you prefer to submit your own podcast, please query first.
Comics: We love comics, and we’d love to see what an inspired comic writer could do with some of the ideas of mathematical fiction. If you are an artist seeking a writer, contact us and we’ll attempt to match writers and authors.
Annual Review: We hope to compile an anthology of our favorite stories from the year, with author permission. This would be a limited run item and would be professionally bound. Budget permitting, contributing authors will receive a free or at-cost copy.
Instructions: We use the Submittable submission system. Click the link to create your submission. Email us if you have any questions, to query on a podcast, or if you might have a file the system won’t accept.
